Nugget Market is a small chain of grocery stores in the Sacramento area, but that has not prevented it from outdoing some of its bigger rivals on matters such as compensation. While some large supermarket chains ended the $2 an hour “heroes’ pay” increase in the summer, Nugget Market has maintained it. The company, which got its name from a 10-year-old who won a naming competition in 1926, also hired outside security to cope with customers angry about mask restrictions so employees wouldn’t have to.
