Malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases worldwide: It killed more than 600,000 people in 2024, according to the World Health Organization. Novartis is intent on conquering this illness, and has run a malaria program for the past three decades to discover, develop, and deliver malaria treatments. In July 2025, Novartis won regulatory approval from Swissmedic, the drug authorization authority, to offer Coartem Baby, a malaria treatment for newborns and new infants. Before this medication was available, no malaria treatment had existed for infants weighing less than 4.5 kilograms. The World Health Organization prequalified Coartem in April 2026. And in November 2025, Novartis revealed positive Phase III results for its next-generation malaria treatment ganaplacide/lumefantrine, which can kill drug-resistant strains of the malaria parasite and block onward transmission.
