Founded in 1926 as a small auto insurer, Nationwide Mutual Insurance is now one of the country’s more diversified financial services companies: Its products include car, motorcycle, homeowners, pet, farm, life, and commercial insurance as well as annuities, mutual funds, retirement plans, and specialty health services. The company reported record-high total sales and premiums in 2021, as year-over-year revenue grew 13%. Nationwide also invested $350 million in financial and insurance startups in 2021. It expanded its eco-friendly portfolio over the course of the year, too, investing $173 million in renewable energy and $375 million in green bonds. The company says its own carbon footprint has decreased by almost 40% per square foot since 2010.
