As lockdowns kicked in, the share of the insurer’s workforce who worked remotely soared from 20% to 98%—in just over a week. Nationwide managed the transition with a massive dose of support, expanding paid time off for those with caregiving duties and bolstering day-care and educational resources for parents. Above all, management stayed in touch: The company says its “leader communications” rose 500%. That connection helped Nationwide rise 66 spots in our ranking. “Frequently hearing from executives gave me the reassurance to know that we were not alone,” says one associate. Nationwide aims to build on that success post-pandemic, when, it says, about 50% of employees will continue to work from home.
