Employees say: "I think the most unique thing about our company is that management is willing to listen to and take into consideration employee's feedback. I talk to people from other companies, and they don't feel like they are heard. I definitely feel like I am heard and am able to speak up in meetings or in a one-on-one to express my opinion, and those opinions are considered in the course of decision-making."

Nationwide builds its workforce with an initial focus on internships—a key pipeline for recruiting diverse entry-level employees. (In 2022, more than half of all interns were ethnically diverse, and over half were women.) Once entry-level workers join the company, the Mentorwide program offers them opportunities to network, build skills, and invest in their career development. Since the program was launched in July 2022, nearly 3,500 associates have participated, 62% of whom are women and 31% of whom are racially or ethnically diverse.
Nationwide offers its associates and members of their households up to 16 free, confidential counseling sessions annually. The program has proved popular, with 27% of employees taking advantage last year compared with an industry norm of 6%.
The company makes an effort to get involved with local communities, partnering with organizations such as Feeding America and the Red Cross; it contributed $3.55 million to those two organizations alone in 2022.

The diversified insurance and financial services company makes employee education and reskilling a top priority. This marks its ninth year on the Best Companies list.
- In the past year, Nationwide launched the MentorWide program, which connects associates to promote networking and mentorship across the entire organization.
- The company hosts regular Catalyst for Change sessions, a safe space where employees can come together to connect and share any concerns.
- To keep up with the changing work culture, in 2020 Nationwide made a five-year, $160 million investment in the Future of Work, a program dedicated to upskilling all Nationwide associates, who are expected to spend eight hours annually on learning new skills.
- Nationwide launched the Future Ready Leader program in 2022 to engage the company’s leaders in a four-week educational course with opportunities to connect with peers and pursue new avenues of skill development.
- “The culture and flexibility offered allows us the opportunity to balance life and work in a [more] meaningful way than ever before—and has helped us move into what’s now normal after the pandemic,” one Nationwide employee said.
