Key indicators are pointing to a possible recession according to economist Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics.

Is the U.S. headed for a recession?

my name is Mark Zandi, Chief economist of moody's analytics. I think the probability of going into recession over the next 12-18 months are high, uncomfortably high and rising, but still less than even. I would put the probability of recession of the economy going into recession over the next year at about one third. And the probability of going into recession over the next two years at about 40, recession is a broad based sustained decline in economic activity. It's a subjective assessment done by a group of academic economists at the National Bureau of Economic Research. And if it looks like the economy is going backwards as opposed to forwards across a broad array of statistics, then it's in recession. I think a critical feature of any recession is a loss of faith. It's when people and businesses grow scared that they're gonna lose their job, that they're still sales are going to decline profitability is gonna evaporate their stock price is going to go down. The last recession was the pandemic recession and that was very short. It came out very fast in large part because of the policy response. Both the Reserve's response, which was to lower interest rates and in fact put interest rates at the so called zero lower bound almost immediately. And then they started quantitative easing buying long term bonds, treasury bonds, mortgage securities to get long term rates, mortgage rates down. And then of course fiscal policy that's what Congress and the trump administration did back in 2020 and what the biden administration did in 2021 they passed various forms of support to the economy, which was just unprecedented, massive. He added all up $5 trillion dollars plus in government support that stimulus checks and more unemployment insurance, rental assistance helps small businesses and airlines no significant factor contributing to the possibility of recession at this point is the very high rate of inflation which goes back to the pandemic and that goes back to the supply chain disruptions many of the factories in Malaysia in Southeast Asia, trying to shut down because of the pandemic. So shortages, higher prices has led to much higher inflation. And of course now with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the disruption to oil, natural gas and agriculture and other commodity markets, prices have gone skyward again. One of the key reasons for all the concern about recession is that the so called yield curve. The difference between long term interest rates and short term interest rates has gotten very flat represents what bond investors are thinking about. The Fed. The two year yield reflects where they think that the reserve is going to go with monetary policy and the 10 year yield is where they think things will be in the very long run when everything sorts itself out. So two year yields rise above 10 year yield. That means that they think that that's really going to step on the brakes hurt the economy so much that the economy is going to go backwards into recession, going back a couple three weeks ago, two year yields actually rose above 10 years, which is very atypical. It happens. But every time that has happened historically, A recession has ensued 12-24 months later. And here's the kicker. It's never falsely predicted a recession, it's never converted for any length of time a couple of months and a recession not ensued. The metaphor in my mind is the economies of the plane. The Fed is the pilot, the control knobs are things they can interest rates and quantitative easing, tightening that they can control. And they're trying to land an economic plane on the tarmac without crashing and crashing with the recession. But as they're coming in, they're being buffeted by all these crosswinds, tailwinds, the pandemic, the Russian invasion, all kinds of things going on. And you know, just think about that image, that's a that's an image where you go, oh, you know, I hope the pilots pretty good at their job and they can get this right. Maybe they'll get a little lucky and the sun will shine through for a brief moment so they can land the plane. But that gives you a sense of the risk

 DANTE DEANTONIO: The CARES Act is an economic stimulus package that was passed in late March valued at just over $2 trillion. It is the largest single piece of fiscal stimulus that's ever been passed through Congress. The stimulus package impacted the economy on several fronts. It provided immediate relief to households in the form of stimulus checks and enhanced unemployment insurance benefits. The enhanced unemployment benefits provided under the CARES Act impacted the economy by providing stabilization of income for households in the early part of the pandemic. Absent those enhanced benefits, labor income declined by several hundred billion dollars in the second quarter of this year. When factoring in those enhanced UI benefits, total after tax income for households actually increased in the second quarter. [MUSIC PLAYING] Moving forward, the most important feature of any unemployment insurance benefits is expanded duration. It's important that the benefit is continued in some way, whether that's the same $600 amount, some reduced level, or a different criteria entirely. The importance is that that benefit is continued and the workers are able to maintain some level of income and spending. If unemployment benefits are significantly reduced from current levels, it will cause a serious hit to household finances and will cause consumers to reduce spending drastically, which will ultimately impact businesses and their ability to survive the pandemic. The biggest risk in extending them further than needed is the additional cost incurred by the federal government from expanding these benefits. There is some concern that the enhanced UI benefits as currently structured create a disincentive to work for those workers who are earning more on unemployment insurance than they were during their previous employments. This concern has not been proven empirically. Most workers are well aware that these benefits will end at some point. And so the risk of turning down gainful employment in exchange for continuing to collect benefits is a risky proposition. [MUSIC PLAYING]

What happens when COVID-19 unemployment benefits run out?

It's our first detailed look at how many Americans have lost their jobs because of the corona virus pandemic, and it's a lot A jaw dropping 3, 283, 000 jobless claims are filed last week A record shattering 6. 6 million Americans filed for unemployment last week. The unemployment situation two days is quite grim. [ UNKNOWN ] made the number of unemployed is increasing rapidly. Just the last few weeks we see a number of layoffs a number of firms analysing layoffs based on the numbers through the end of March, which indicated 10 million people had filed for unemployment insurance in just the last year. Two weeks of March. We are now expecting the total number to reach as high as 15 to 20 million people. We do expect to see the unemployment rate jump certainly in each of the months in Q2 for the quarter overall the average should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 to 11 Percent and in June, last month of the quarter we expect to see that the unemployment rate peak around 12- 15 %. Somewhere in that neighborhood. This is a unique situation. So I think people need to understand this is not a typical downturn. The correlaton between the labor market I would say and unemployment rate and the broader economy is nearly one for one. So if the labor market is down, people feel Cautious, right? They lose confidence and they restrict their spending. Even people who aren't able to keep their jobs are feeling insecure, they're not going to be spending they're going to be very, very cautious in terms of their decisions, and that then can also have a negative effect on the economy. [ MUSIC ] Just the speed with which this has hit us has been a real shock. The other thing that surprised me is just how global in nature this particular recession is, right? Every country around the globe is Dealing with COVID 19. Right there infections in every country. And every country around the globe by our analysis is in some form of recession right now. So there's really no refuge. If you look across the globe. In terms of the economic fallout here, it's all happening at the same time and that's, that's unusual, even if you went back to the Great Recession. At least some countries were doing okay, while others were really struggling. That at least provides some offset or some balance to the outlook. This is probably an event that's going to have us recovering over the next two, three, maybe four years to get back to some sense of a equilbrium in terms of labor markets. So it's gonna be a long, slow process. Quite frankly there are a lot of unknowns in terms of what the labor market and what the economy is going to look like. On the other side of this right are people still want going to want to go to hotels and restaurants at least in the numbers that they have. Are we going to continue ordering all of our groceries online. So this is going to be a time of Some transition here as we figure out what the new normal is for the economy. [ MUSIC ]
