Over the last few years, the company has launched several programs aimed at improving flexibility, choice, and belonging for all associates. Marriott has comprehensive compensation and benefits offerings, such as health care coverage, work/life support benefits, well-being support, retirement savings, and an employee stock purchase plan. For the parents in its workforce, Marriott offers discounts to over 2,000 childcare providers and emergency drop-in day care. In 2022, the company announced Bridging the Gap, a multiyear, $50 million development program that addresses the financial barriers underrepresented groups face in developing and owning hotels. It’s also built on its human trafficking awareness program, which hotels often serve a <a href="https://polarisproject.org/human-trafficking-and-hotels-motels/#:~:text=Hotels%20%26%20Motels%20in%20Trafficking%20Operations,-%C3%97&amp;text=Labor%20trafficking%20may%20also%20occur,linens%2C%20coffee%2C%20and%20soaps.">critical role</a>. The onset of COVID-19 hit the hospitality industry hard, and the past few years have been challenging, even for a multinational that encompasses over 8,000 properties under 30 leading brands spanning 139 countries and territories. Yet Marriott continues to work toward a better employee experience by building care into its DNA and actively listening to team members’ needs. Over the past year, Marriott has enhanced its retirement savings program, boosting matching, reducing vesting time frames, and broadening eligibility. With an eye toward inclusivity and diversity, Marriott also rolled out part-time management positions, which the company says allows it to tap into a broader talent pool. As the hospitality industry inches back from its pandemic low point, Marriott continues to look out for employees with increased mental health support—including online resources to help workers manage stressful situations—and paid sick time for employees who are unable to work because of a positive COVID-19 diagnosis or who have been required to quarantine because of exposure. Managers of the family-run company “pride themselves in their take-care culture of treating employees as you would treat a guest,” one staffer says. The international hotel chain has focused initiatives to recruit and support employees from a wide set of backgrounds, including setting a goal to hire at least 1,000 veterans in 2021. It also has a partnership with the International Rescue Committee to hire refugees.

Like all hospitality businesses, Marriott suffered in 2020. The company furloughed tens of thousands of workers from its 842 U.S. locations, but kept out-of-work hotel staffers in the loop with monthly voluntary calls in which the furloughed could learn about Marriott’s status and its prospects of economic recovery. The company also helped those who did not expect to return to Marriott to seek jobs in industries that were hiring. “I never once felt I was alone over the past eight months,” notes one furloughed employee. Some laid-off workers, however, rallied for better severance pay and rehire rights.

Rankings were determined by employee surveys and the representation of women within the organizations.

Expectant mothers are encouraged to join Marriott's confidential maternity program with a $1,000 medical expense incentive. Through the program, expecting mothers gain support from trainer labor and delivery nurses. Employees as a whole gain special benefits for loyalty, too: after 25 years, Marriott employees earn free access to Marriott hotels for the rest of their lives. While day-to-day benefits vary by location, many employees enjoy free snacks during the day, health coverage, and banking services. "People really take an interest in your growth and development. As long as you put the effort in and show that you want to grow your career, the sky is the limit," says one employee.

Marriott has been the world’s largest hotel group since its 2015 merger with Starwood Hotels. It manages and franchises more than 35 brands, spanning from luxury offerings like JW Marriott, the Ritz-Carlton, and St. Regis to more budget-friendly options such as Courtyard by Marriott and Four Points by Sheraton. Its portfolio also includes W, Renaissance, and Westin.
