The home improvement retailer Lowe’s was founded in 1921. The brand operates 1,700 home improvement stores and employs approximately 300,000 associates. Its big-box stores, website, and app complete some 16 million customer transactions a week in the United States. Lowe’s sells DIY products, decor, tools, and gardening supplies, as well as raw materials for builders and contractors. It also sells appliances and electrical items, and offers installation services through independent contractors. Founded as a general store, Lowe’s pivoted to focusing entirely on home improvement in the 1940s, ahead of the postwar building boom, and is now the world’s second-largest home improvement retailer. It became a publicly traded company in 1961.
