JCPenney on the critical role accessible fashion plays in every household

JC Penny was founded in 1902. So over 100 and 20 years ago, and we were founded in um Camera Wyoming with a store that James Cash Penny opened, that was called the Golden Rule Store. And that's really because our company is based on the golden rule of really treating others the way that you want to be treated. And that has been the core and the foundation of our company for over 100 and 20 years, really focused on customer service. Our purpose is really to serve and celebrate with America's diverse working families and that means giving them an opportunity to buy the things that they need for their family and to have those things without having to make tradeoffs that they have to make in their day to day lives. And that really has been communicated to our employees. It grounds where the, the purpose of our brand and our make it kind of campaign that we just launched with the brand. And it really helps guide our decisions overall in terms of the products that we're buying and the choices that we making, how we're operating our stores and our website and, and, and how we serve our customers. I do think that leadership today is different than it's been historically and it's a lot more about um setting teams up for success, making sure the right talent is in place, making sure the mission is clear and then listening and making sure that the teams can get done what they need to get done versus, you know, a more traditional command and control kind of environment ESG has been for a long time, an important part of what we're doing. And, and we go back and look at the ESG goals on a regular basis and really look at how do we focus on and help make the world a better place. And that varies through things like community involvement and things like that to the products that we make and how we do that. And so we'll partner wrap the supply chain. One of the things and one of the examples is we committed by 2026 that all of our fashion and home products is gonna be made from preferred sustainable fabrics. And so there are things that we can control and we can do to embed in our product and make the world a better place. And I think the the magic of things like that is those fabrics are also preferred by customers. So we're going to have a better product that's better for the world. We live to the end of the day. What I'd like customers to know our company for is that we help them take the moments in their life that really matter. And some of those moments are really big moments like they could be a daughter's wedding or something like that. It could be a first day of work and every customer really has a story about JC Penny. It could also be some of the smaller moments. It could be just having breakfast with their kids or driving their kids to school or having dinner with their family or a special moment. But the reality is our customer, especially in the world that we live in today is a $75,000 household median income family that is facing trade off every single day in their life. And so our purpose and our mission is to give them a moment when they don't have to make those tradeoffs when they can have accessible fashion, when they can have a shopping experience that treats them with respect and they can take a moment and not have to make those tradeoffs that they have to make in their everyday life and really have a moment with the people that they care about to make it count.

The competition for talent has moved well beyond employers competing with one another to find the best workers. Now, as employees demand more flexibility and are driven by other non-monetary factors, managers also find themselves rethinking employee value propositions to address the new power and choices workers have. To build a resilient workforce of top talent, CEOs need to radically rethink ways of working—from embedding meaning and purpose in work, to developing opportunities for individuals to add new layers of skills, to fostering social capital within the organization to build networks and trust. Drawing on McKinsey & Company’s latest research, this session will explore what factors make employees happier, more productive, and more likely to stay–and how CEOs are driving business value by deploying a talent-first mindset.

Drawing on McKinsey & Company’s latest research, this session will explore what factors make employees happier, more productive, and more likely to stay.

I want to thank you all for being here today for this special ceo roundtable on the new realities of talent and the workplace and a special thanks to our partner Mckinsey and company for hosting this conversation. A good group of C. E. O. S here. I think all of you know the competitive struggle for talent is unlike anything certainly I've ever experienced. I think most of you have ever experienced before when we asked Fortune 500 ceos last month what their biggest challenge was, even though we're in the middle of a war in europe, you know, and approaching a possible recession, a redefinition of work Still, number one thing on their mind was Talyn um the the need to attract and retain good talent in the workforce. The pandemic has added this whole new dimension about where people work and when people work and how they work and even why they work. Uh and we want to talk about all that uh today, what are the uh what are the best best practices that you all have found? What are the factors that make employees happier more productive, more likely to stay with the company? Uh And and how are you as C. E. O. S. Driving business value By focusing on talent 1st. Um uh This is a this is a small group which is good. My intention is to engage all of you really want you to share your own insights and best practices. Uh If for some reason you don't want to be called on turn, turn off your camera but if your camera's on, I consider you fair game. So be prepared.
