Founded as a company of Chicago tool inventors in 1912, who were brought together through an ad in The Economist, ITW is now a global supplier of tools, parts, and equipment for manufacturers of everything from dishwashers to cars. Decades ago, the company was perhaps best known for inventing the self-drilling screw (the tip of which is shaped into a bit that digs into the surface it is being driven into—and is still commonly used in construction today). ITW prides itself on maintaining profitability even during the Great Depression. Today, the company operates through seven divisions: automotive, construction, food equipment, polymers and fluids, speciality products, testing and measurement products, and welding. Its longstanding motto, “You're never more than a few feet away from a product of ITW,” remains as true today as it was during the golden age of American manufacturing.
