Health insurers have been looking like pretty good bets in the short term. A lot of that has to do with a suspension of health insurance industry fees, designed to reduce the industry’s tax burden, which was implemented in 2019. But Humana owes much of its own recent success to its focus on lucrative for-profit markets like Medicare Advantage, where the company expects membership to swell by more than 10% over the coming year. In May 2021, Humana plotted its next big evolutionary move by obtaining full ownership of home health care services firm Kindred at Home—a leader in a space that’s likely to see continued growth, given the steady aging of the overall population and the normalization of nonhospital care during the pandemic.
