Though often envied by Americans, Canada’s health care system has gaps of its own, leaving women, young people, and lower-income workers particularly vulnerable. GreenShield, a health care and insurance organization, strives to plug those holes. Its Women’s Mental Health program has so far supported over 120,000 women; in early 2025 GreenShield introduced a Youth Mental Health initiative to address problems with affordability and access to equitable care. And GreenShield’s Essential Medicines, launched in 2023, provides 12 months of access to certain prescription medications at no cost to eligible individuals without drug coverage; it has served about 90,000 people to date.
