The Cincinnati-based bank has origins dating back to 1858 as the Bank of the Ohio Valley, and today operates more than 1,100 branches in 11 states across the Midwest and Southeastern U.S. Fifth Third slid 33 spots in the rankings in 2020, as the pandemic curbed loan and deposit growth and low interest rates hamstrung its interest income. But its shares rose more than 50% in the first five months of 2021, as its business lines benefited from a broader post-COVID economic recovery.
