Second only to United Parcel Service in the U.S. package-shipping business, FedEx said COVID-19 affected “virtually all revenue and expense line items” during the final quarter of its latest fiscal year, which ended May 31, 2020, dinging revenues 0.7% to $69.2 billion versus the year prior. Despite the disruption, profits surged an eye-popping 138% to $1.29 billion, nearly rivaling much bigger UPS’s $1.34 billion in profits. The jump is mostly due to earlier costly investments FedEx made to revamp its historically business-centric delivery network so it can better cater to residential customers.
