Drivers’ anxiety over where to find chargers is a key challenge when it comes to broader EV adoption. EVgo is one of the largest U.S. public direct current fast-charging networks and addresses this issue for drivers by placing its charging stations at locations such as grocery stores and other retail centers. Founded in 2010, EVgo has more than 1,200 fast-charging stations across 47 states. The company received a $1.25 billion U.S. Department of Energy Loan Programs Office loan guarantee to build out 7,500 additional fast-charging stalls. The initiative proved that public charging infrastructure can achieve commercial success if it develops the right capital structure. EVgo’s technology is innovative because of its ability to make public charging a routine task just like filling up at a gas station. The California-based company adopted the NACS (Tesla) connector standard to ensure interoperability across EV brands, and has grown its Autocharge+ plug-and-charge feature to make charging quicker without tapping or credit cards.
