Enel

Enel in Fortune Rankings

Enel’s story began in 1962, when the Italian government put every aspect of the country’s power system—generation, transmission, distribution, supply and trading—into a single, state-run organization. From the 1990s onwards, Enel became both a private company and a multinational: It now operates in 30 countries on every continent, with a particular focus on Italy, Spain, and Latin America. The group’s strategy revolves around its extensive distribution networks, which serve over 70 million end users, and increased investment in renewables. The Rome-headquartered company already has claim to be the world’s largest private renewable power generator, with 63 GW of managed capacity, and it plans for another 13.4 GW to come online by the end of 2026.
