Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly is known for breaking ground in insulin, polio vaccines, penicillin, and antidepressants, most famously developing Prozac. Now, in the age of GLP-1 medications, which have transformed obesity and diabetes treatment, the company has shown it can move fast. Eli Lilly brought tirzepatide (sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound) from clinic to market in six years, compared with the company’s usual 11-year development cycles. An ongoing battle for Lilly, as well as Novo Nordisk, involves fighting copycat versions of its GLP-1 products made by compounders, and forcing them to modify their disputed claims. The FDA has warned patients and health care professionals about the dangers of compounded GLP-1 drugs and unapproved weight-loss medicine.
