It was founded in 1980 by Charlie Ergen, Candy Ergen, and Jim DeFranco as a C-band satellite dish distributor. Since then, it has grown to acquire the Dish, Sling TV, Boost Mobile, Hughes, Hughesnet, and Jupiter brands in the U.S., Australia, and Europe. The company claims to have invented the first consumer TV digital video recorder. In addition to consumer television and phone service, the company serves other telecommunications providers, aeronautical services, and civilian and defense government agencies on an enterprise basis.
