Founded in San Diego but now totally remote, Drata monitors companies’ security data to ensure they are compliant with the thicket of international regulations, making it one of the bright stars in the red-hot GRC (governance, risk, and compliance) market. Its platform supports more than 17 legal requirements and cybersecurity frameworks, including the GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC 2. The company has signed on nearly 4,000 corporate customers since founding in 2020, and it’s enjoyed a robust demand among investors. Drata was valued at $1 billion in 2021’s Series B funding round—earning the startup unicorn status in just one year—and it is now worth $2 billion. The company has raised a total of $328 million from investors including Salesforce Ventures, GGV Capital, and ICONIQ Growth.

–Cofounder and CEO Adam Markowitz began his career as an engineer in NASA’s Space Shuttle Program, where he designed and tested liquid rocket engines and worked on the main engine. He later founded Portfolium, a startup connecting students with employers, which sold to edtech company Instructure for $43 million in 2019. 
–Drata offers compliance automation to customers such as WordPress VIP and insurance provider Lemonade. 
–Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella contributed to Drata’s $100 million Series B funding round in 2021, while Snowflake CEO Frank Slootman, and PagerDuty CEO Jennifer Tejada all contributed to Drata’s $200 million Series C round in 2022 (along with actor Ed Norton).
