Europe’s largest logistics company, DHL Group traces its origins to Franz von Taxis, who started delivering mail for the Hapsburg dynasty in 1490. It took its modern form when the privatized German postal service Deutsche Post acquired U.S. courier DHL in 2002. Today, its German domestic business accounts for less than a quarter of the group’s revenue. Its main focus is instead on express delivery, global freight and forwarding, and international logistics and supply chain services, including warehousing. E-commerce services, such as last-mile delivery, represent a relatively small part of the total but are a key growth area, alongside specialist life sciences logistics. Based in Bonn, Germany, DHL Group employs around 590,000 employees in 220 countries.
