Comcast also aims to be carbon neutral by 2035 and has committed $1 billion to closing the digital divide in the next decade through the Project Up initiative. The company’s <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/stories/comcast-goal-1250-lift-zones-2022">Lift Zones</a> program provides free Wi-Fi access in neighborhood community centers across the country. Since its September 2020 launch, Lift Zones has provided nearly 6 million free Wi-Fi user sessions to students, adults, veterans, and seniors. The cable and media conglomerate, whose subsidiaries include NBCUniversal and Xfinity, saw marginal growth in 2022, as revenue rose 4% and profits decreased 62% compared with the prior year.

 	<li>Losses at Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, totaled $2.5 billion in 2022. But the streaming service reported 20 million U.S. paid subscribers in the last quarter of 2022, up 5 million from the previous quarter.</li> 
 	<li>Comcast fired Jeff Shell, NBCUniversal’s CEO, in April 2023, after a CNBC news anchor alleged that he had sexually harassed her. Comcast president Michael Cavanagh has since stepped in to oversee NBCUniversal.</li>

Meeting the needs of 130,000 workers isn’t easy, but Comcast seems to have found the right formula, gathering feedback via frequent surveys. It offers an annual day of learning to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion, with over 57,000 employees showing up to listen to guest speakers. The company has adopted a long-term, aspirational goal of achieving a workforce that is 33% people of color and 50% women at all levels. “The culture is unlike any other organization I know,” one staffer says. “They prioritize the interests and needs of the associates who work here. This comes in the form of balance, benefits, workplace amenities, community involvement, and social/political engagement.”

Aggregate sales hit $37.8 trillion last year—an increase of 19%, the highest annual growth rate in the list’s history.

The cable and media conglomerate saw strong revenue and profit growth in 2021, fueled both by broadband internet—a coveted utility for remote workers—and streaming media. Although later to the streaming game than some of its competitors, Comcast has been aggressive and recently allocated $2 billion for content production on NBCUniversal’s Peacock platform. And in April 2022 it announced that it would partner with Charter, a fellow cable giant, in a joint venture to develop new streaming platforms and devices.

The telecom giant, which employs more than 120,000 in the U.S., saw a surge in demand amid stay-at-home orders, as its Internet service became a primary means of interaction. Comcast’s media and entertainment arm, NBCUniversal, meanwhile, largely experienced a lull as movie theaters shuttered. The company responded to the shake-up with extra paid time off, reduced copays, and retraining—for example, some retail staff pivoted to call center work—and by helping more Americans access the web. One major initiative was the creation of 1,000 new Wi-Fi–connected “Lift Zones” in local communities, while others included waiving two months’ worth of fees for new low-income customers and expanding hotspot access to noncustomers.

Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year—the first decline in half a decade.

The pandemic was a mixed bag for the nation’s largest cable TV provider. More customers than ever—1.4 million in 2020—cut the cord and dropped Comcast’s Xfinity TV package. But 2 million signed up for new Internet service, and many more upgraded their speeds (and monthly bills). Meanwhile, Comcast’s three-year-old wireless phone service added 774,000 customers, for a total of almost 3 million. That service turned cash flow positive on an adjusted basis for the first time in the first quarter of 2021. Still, some of Comcast’s other businesses, particularly leisure (theme parks) and entertainment (movie studios) took a hit owing to fallout from COVID-19. Total revenue for the company declined nearly 5% and profits shrank 19% in 2020.

This year marked the first time Comcast included British pay TV provider Sky, an acquisition it made in 2018, in its full-year report, helping the cable company grow its revenue by 15% in 2019. Demand for high-speed internet also boosted the 57-year-old company’s earnings. Comcast added a total of 442,000 new Internet customers in the fourth quarter of 2019 alone, helping to offset declines in video and voice subscriptions. But numbers were also down across the company’s NBCUniversal division, with declines in cable networks, broadcast TV, and filmed entertainment contributing to a 5% overall revenue drop in the segment.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

In 2026, Comcast Cable was the leading provider of cable internet access in the U.S., under the Xfinity brand. Comcast’s NBCUniversal division includes the television network NBC and film studio Universal Pictures.
