CMS Energy is the parent to Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest electric and natural gas utility that serves 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents. The company’s other arm, North Star Clean Energy, produces electricity, including solar power, in Michigan, Ohio, and Arkansas; owns natural gas and cogeneration plants in Michigan; and manages biomass operations in Michigan and North Carolina. It also partners with other companies on clean energy projects, such as a solar installation in Arkansas with General Motors. The CMS Energy holding company was created in 1987, but its history dates back to 1886, when the utility’s forerunner opened for business.
