As one of the world’s biggest network-services companies, Cloudflare currently manages traffic for about 20% of the World Wide Web. And in the tug of war over intellectual property rights between AI companies and content producers—including news organizations—Cloudflare has sided firmly in the camp of the creators. Between September 2024 and July 2025, over 1 million Cloudflare customers opted to block AI crawlers—bots that harvest data and text to help engineers build AI models—from their websites, using tools that Cloudflare provided for that purpose. And on July 1, 2025, Cloudflare began blocking crawlers by default.
