Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program, established in 2015, aims to address this digital divide. To date, CDA has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in over 1,500 active or completed projects in 49 countries. In the U.S., these projects have included expanding access to free Wi-Fi for approximately 40,000 people in Fort Worth, Tex., and installing broadband services in Orangeburg, S.C., home to two historically black colleges and universities. Abroad, Cisco introduced mobile doctor’s offices for the elderly and refugees in Germany, and helped rural villages get online in India. Cisco Systems has long dominated the markets for the networking gear and switches that companies use to connect to the web. In recent years, that business has been under significant pressure, as more customers buy cloud-computing resources in a pay-as-you-go model from others, rather than buying data-center gear. In December, Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins announced one of the company’s boldest efforts yet to reinvigorate itself: selling specialized networking chips. That initiative provides Cisco with a new product that even customers that make their own networking gear may want or need to buy. Widening demand for 5G connectivity is also an opportunity for Cisco: At the end of 2019, the company was reportedly in negotiations with over 100 telecom operators to help them deploy 5G networks.

Google/Alphabet is the No. 1 place to work for the seventh time in 10 years. Six newcomers include Veterans United at No. 30, Hilton Hotels at No. 56, and Slalom Consulting at No. 100. IKEA’s U.S. arm returns to the list, along with GoDaddy and Sheetz.

This year’s list marks Fortune's 18th year of partnering with Great Place to Work. Google ranks No.1 for the sixth time, and 16 new companies make impressive debuts, including Acuity (No. 3), Twitter (No. 24), and Riot Games (No. 13).

The world's 500 largest companies generated $31.2 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in profits in 2014. Together, this year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries.

Nike, Cisco, MasterCard, SABMiller, Vodafone, Google—and 45 other companies that are doing well by doing good.

Google tops the list once again, marking its eighth appearance and fifth time as No. 1.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

Cisco is a global provider of networking infrastructure, designing and building everything from routers and wireless access points to the software that’s used to secure them. Founded in 1984 by a team of Stanford computer scientists, Cisco went public in 1990 and was added to the Dow Jones industrial average in 2009. Cisco made a flurry of acquisitions in the 2010s and into the 2020s. It closed in March 2024 on a $28 billion deal for Splunk, a cybersecurity and analytics firm, as part of a larger bet on companies adopting AI.
