China State Construction and Engineering is the world’s largest construction firm, with 2021 revenues of $293.7 billion, a record 17.1% increase from the previous year. It has recently completed high-profile construction projects, including the building of 28 Winter Olympics venues and 100 “emergency hospitals” to address pandemic-related medical needs. The company has also won contracts for infrastructure projects at home and abroad. It will soon break ground on a 5G network in China's Henan Province, a solar-cell power plant in China's Shaanxi province, and the North East Rail Line in Victoria, Australia.

The China State Construction Engineering Corp., the world’s largest construction firm by revenue, is behind such iconic projects as Beijing’s new phoenix-shaped Daxing Airport, Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, and the Doha Tower in Dubai. In 2020 the state-backed company’s revenue grew 13.7% to $250 billion. It won bids in China to build an exhibition center in Tianjin and new metro lines in Xi’an. The CSCEC also played a key role in China’s COVID-19 response, constructing 119 emergency hospitals in China amid the pandemic. Famously, Beijing commissioned CSCEC to build a two-floor hospital in Wuhan with 1,000 beds and 30 intensive care units in under 10 days in February 2020 as COVID-19 first spread in the city.

In the first six months of 2020, the state-owned giant reeled in new business worth some $136 billion, up 4.8% from the same period in 2019. As economies worldwide have stalled under lockdowns due to the coronavirus, many governments have turned to infrastructure investment for a boost, and CSCE—as the face of China’s Belt and Road Initiative—is often first in line. But with COVID-19 ebbing in waves, many of CSCE’s outstanding projects could suffer delays in the months and, potentially, years ahead.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues.
