The Beijing-based conglomerate China Railway Construction is one of the major builders of China’s national railway network and has been expanding high-speed rail development in accordance with Beijing’s economic strategy.

 	<li>With divisions in construction, engineering, manufacturing, development, and other fields, this is the company’s 12th consecutive year on the Global 500 list, though it has dropped four spots in the past year.</li> 
 	<li>China Railway Construction saw a profit increase last year, up 6% to $1.8 billion.</li> 
 	<li>The company is involved in several international construction projects, including the Lagos-Ibadan Railway, which opened in 2021 and accelerated modernization in Nigeria and strengthened China’s connection with West Africa. Some of its other international projects have hit major problems, however, with Uganda canceling its deal with the company in January, and a project in Pakistan hitting roadblocks in its financing.</li>

China Railway Construction moved up three spots to No. 39 on this year’s Global 500 list. The state-owned construction enterprise, whose businesses include infrastructure engineering, design, and consulting, posted 19.9% revenue growth and 14.7% profit growth in 2021 as China pushed forward with railway expansions. The company successfully listed its subsidiary China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation on the Shanghai stock exchange for $577 million in June 2021. But the company has faced problems on other fronts. In June 2022, China Railway Construction announced that it would sell its 49% stake in Evergrande Real Estate, a subsidiary of debt-plagued developer China Evergrande Group, just two years after purchasing it. China Railway Construction was also one of 59 Chinese companies sanctioned by U.S. President Biden in June 2021 for ties to the Chinese government’s military, and it lost a major light rail contract with Israel in February 2022 owing in part to pressure from the Biden administration.

Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year—the first decline in half a decade.

Chinese investment in domestic railway projects has slowed as Beijing attempts to pare down the debt propping up many of its state-owned firms. But China Railway Construction Corp. (CRCC), which earns 90% of its income from domestic operations, reported strong growth in 2020. Revenue rose 9.62% for the year to $140 billion, with profits hitting $4 billion. The construction group wants to earn more from overseas operations, like the $3 billion contract CRCC signed in April 2021 to renovate a cross-country rail line in Nigeria. But overseas deals accounted for only 9% of all new contracts the group signed last year, down 13% from the year before.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues.
