After seeing impressive growth in 2020, China Life Insurance, the largest life insurer in China, fell eight spots to No. 40 on this year’s Global 500. The company brought in $157 billion in revenue, an 8.6% increase from 2020, but saw a 33.6% decrease in profits. The COVID-19 pandemic continued to affect sales, as well as agent recruitment and retention, and that negatively impacted growth, leading to a 9.3% year-over-year decrease in premiums from new policies. The company did see a 15% uptick in investment assets, primarily from increased allocation to durable assets such as government bonds.

Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year—the first decline in half a decade.

China Life Insurance offers a range of insurance services to more than 500 million customers in China. The 72-year-old state-backed firm has started transforming itself amid challenges from more tech-savvy rivals like Ping An. That effort includes building out a centralized digital ecosystem that now features 170,000 different types of services and facilitates communication between China Life, its customers, and health care providers. The insurance giant is also preparing for China’s looming demographic challenge, doubling the pension assets under its management to an estimated $142 billion in recent years to help China care for its aging population.

Majority state-owned China Life Insurance is the country’s biggest life insurer, offering life, accident, and health insurance products. In 2019, it celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding and saw revenue jump 16.3% year-on-year amid a company-wide "revitalization" that included restructuring and the introduction of new organizational models. Gross investment income rose 77.7% in 2019; the company's investment portfolio includes a range of companies, from Uber to Ant Financial to Chinese genome sequencing company BGI. During the coronavirus outbreak in China in early 2020, China Life provided free insurance protection for 2.48 million frontline workers, according to its end-of-year report, though it didn't say how much that initiative cost.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues.
