The pet food and products online retailer was originally founded under the name "Mr. Chewy" in 2011. The company has grown since its Mr. Chewy days, and now joins the Fortune 500 list for the first time, having been spun off from retailer PetSmart in October of 2020. The timing was fortuitous for independence, as the pandemic spurred a mass rush to buy pets, especially puppies, as people looked for an escape from lockdown.
