Expand Energy was founded in 1989 as Chesapeake Energy by Aubrey McClendon and Tom L. Ward, and it has since evolved into the largest independent natural gas producer in the United States. The company is headquartered in Oklahoma City and was renamed Expand Energy in October 2024 after Chesapeake Energy and Southwestern Energy completed their merger. The company’s operations are concentrated in some of the most productive gas basins in North America, including the Appalachian Basin and the Haynesville Shale. It also maintains interests in the Marcellus, Utica, Haynesville, and related Mid-Continent assets.
