Few companies have embraced diversity as strongly as Capital One, and its employees recognize the effort: At least 92% of every racial/ethnic group surveyed said they were proud of the positive impact their employer has in their communities. “Capital One does an amazing job to ensure that each associate feels they belong,” says one staffer. “Their business resource groups provide support so that associates can achieve their full potential in an environment that values the differences we bring to the workplace.” The financial institution aims to balance in-person collaboration and team needs with individual choice and rolled out a hybrid work plan in 2021. Mondays and Fridays are companywide virtual days, and Tuesday through Thursday, the offices are open. While employees are encouraged to go in, the company is not requiring it.

Aggregate sales hit $37.8 trillion last year—an increase of 19%, the highest annual growth rate in the list’s history.

The pandemic posed an immediate conundrum for bank branches that needed to provide services while keeping employees safe. Capital One, like other banks, implemented safety measures, but the firm also temporarily increased hourly wages, boosting pay by $10 an hour for branch and Capital One Café employees and adding $5 an hour for call center agents. U.S. nonexempt hourly workers, meanwhile, were still paid for all their hours even if they had to pare down their schedules or couldn’t work remotely. That has all helped the credit card titan based in McLean, Va., jump 15 spots on Fortune’s list this year. This year’s list marks Fortune's 18th year of partnering with Great Place to Work. Google ranks No.1 for the sixth time, and 16 new companies make impressive debuts, including Acuity (No. 3), Twitter (No. 24), and Riot Games (No. 13).

The world's 500 largest companies generated $31.2 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in profits in 2014. Together, this year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries.

Google tops the list once again, marking its eighth appearance and fifth time as No. 1.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

Capital One is a bank and issuer of credit cards, founded in 1994 and based in Virginia. As of 2024 it was the third-largest issuer of Visa and Mastercard credit cards in the U.S. Capital One also offers a range of banking services, including consumer and commercial loans, and has 259 retail locations. In May 2025, Capital One completed the acquisition of Discover Financial Services, agreed to in 2024, in a stock transaction valued at $35.3 billion. The resulting company is now one of the world’s largest credit card issuers, with more than 100 million customers.
