One of the world’s leading independent dry-bulk shipowners, Berge Bulk is working to develop a zero-emissions fleet by 2050 and aiming for a zero-carbon future. WindWings—large, rigid aerodynamic sails that harness wind power—on the company’s carriers can reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% and lower emissions by 19.5 metric tons a day on average. With more than 100 ships and a carrying capacity of more than 15 million deadweight tons, the company’s decarbonization work is hugely consequential to global commodity shipping. Berge Bulk has committed about $1 billion over five years to decarbonize its fleet. The initiative involves newer, more efficient vessels, wind-assist technology, and biofuel trials. In 2025, a Berge Bulk vessel stocked with iron ore became the first to complete a voyage from Australia to China powered entirely by B100 biofuel, a blend composed of 50% waste tallow and 50% used cooking oil.
