It may be difficult to imagine smiling a whole lot over the past year of distress and social isolation. But Baptist Health South Florida has always been a place of happiness, an organization which used to facilitate a literal Day of Smiles during which the health system offered free reconstructive surgeries to children with facial deformities whose families couldn’t afford to pay. While that specific program recently ended, Baptist Health still provided more than $380 million in total charity care and community benefits in 2020 with similar programs for the people it serves. Beyond looking out for its patient community, Baptist Health has made its more than 23,000 workers’ safety and security its mission statement. “This year they’ve gone above and beyond, providing recognition bonuses due to COVID to help employees financially,” says one staffer. “They’ve provided lots of resources for employee assistance—whether it’s financial or emotional, we have it.” Perhaps that approach explains why Baptist Health has been on the 100 Best Companies list for the past 21 years.
