The global banking giant has been investing in workforce upskilling for nearly 30 years, investing 2.4 billion euros in job training and broader higher education. Among its most effective tools: Santander Open Academy, which offers free courses and scholarships for about 1,000 programs every year, in partnership with universities in 14 countries. Course subjects include digital technologies, languages, sustainability, leadership skills, and AI; the bank estimates that 3.7 million people and businesses have benefited.

The global bank granted almost $1.3 billion in microloans to 1.2 million underbanked entrepreneurs in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru last year. In its home country of Spain, Santander has partnered with the national postal service to bring basic financial services to over 1,500 towns, doing so for free in places where it does not have a branch. The bank aims to provide financial access to 15 million people worldwide by 2025.

Spain’s biggest bank is also the biggest bank on our list, with revenues hitting $99.2 billion in 2022, up 26.1% on the previous year. Profit increased by 5.2% to $10.1 billion in the same period.

Established in 1996, the Santander Universities program supports more than 1,300 universities and institutions across 25 countries. The Spain-based global bank has invested over €2.2 billion ($2.35 billion) into the program, and has helped over 1 million students and entrepreneurs worldwide in education, employment and entrepreneurship. The program includes two core platforms. Santander Scholarships aim to expand access to higher education, internships, and essential-skills training. In 2022 the platform offered more than 1,100 scholarships and training programs in 11 countries, with more than 266,000 beneficiaries. The second platform, Santander X, trains, coaches, and supports business owners and entrepreneurs.

Aggregate sales hit $37.8 trillion last year—an increase of 19%, the highest annual growth rate in the list’s history.

Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year—the first decline in half a decade.

Santander Brasil, a company of Santander Group, is green energy’s financial engine in the world’s sixth-largest nation by population. It has been involved in about $11 billion worth of green-power deals since 2012, having financed or structured roughly a third of Brazil’s wind-power projects. Santander has also made its solar-panel lending more generous, with longer payment terms and up to 100% financing, to foster more users.

This year's Fortune Global 500 generated $27.6 trillion in revenues and $1.5 trillion in profits.

The world's 500 largest companies generated $31.2 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in profits in 2014. Together, this year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues.

Capital markets will reward companies that are investing in this transition and will punish the companies that are not the big companies have the resources to do this transition. Obviously they don't help or financing, you know, etcetera. But we can come up together with the closest and then together as partners, we can develop that example, we want a mandate, supply chain finance mandate with Tesco where we actually raped all of the suppliers of the company. And so those suppliers which are typically much smaller company, they get better financing terms on the back of their own green and this we're also thinking the world beyond those companies. Right? So, for example, efficient housing all around the world, can individual customers pay for making their houses efficient? Should we be thinking about mortgage products time together with companies that are engineering companies that are going to be making homes more efficient? And the banking system? True. So it's the kind of things we're thinking about it together, creating ecosystems. I think what is important is that collectively, because, you know, everybody needs, we need to move together in this past. The important thing here is that we help everybody.
