Associates at investment bank and financial services company Baird can buy company stock, and approximately seven in 10 are shareholders. The rigorous hiring process includes a “receptionist test,” to ensure that candidates are respectful of everyone they interact with—including receptionists, who are asked for their impressions. Baird also puts a big emphasis on mentorship. Last year it launched a reverse-mentor program called Bridge Builders, pairing associates of color with executive committee members for six months with a goal to provide associate mentors a significant opportunity to build relationships with high-level firm leaders, while executive committee mentees are supported on their own inclusion and diversity journeys.
