Atlantic Health System has treated thousands of COVID patients over the course of the pandemic. Initially, this required swift training and redeployment of nurses to work in designated COVID units, of which there were eventually 37 in total. Atlantic also had to scale up a call center for its frontline workers who were exposed to the virus so they could report their status, then receive support accordingly, from antibody tests to staffing adjustments to mental health services. It also partnered with local hotels to secure rooms for frontline employees and arranged for dining gift cards and care package deliveries, in addition to providing additional pandemic pay, a slew of expanded health care benefits, continued on-site child care, and a relief program for hard-hit employees. The health system’s COVID response helped propel it upward 21 spots from last year’s ranking.
