Archer Daniels Midland

The agricultural commodities and food processing giant, which falls five places on this year’s list, faced a bevy of challenges in 2019, including spring flooding in the American Midwest, an African swine fever outbreak in China, and continuing trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Revenues rose only 0.5% from the previous year due to the weak performance of ADM’s ag services and oilseeds division, as well as its carbohydrate solutions unit. Both were challenged by lower sales volumes and commodity price declines. A bright spot was the company’s nutrition business, where sales were up 50% largely due to acquisitions like Neovia, a French animal nutrition company.
