Business insiders have spoken: Asked which companies they most admire, more than 4,100 executives, directors, and analysts chose these top 50 All-Stars.

This year’s list marks Fortune's 18th year of partnering with Great Place to Work. Google ranks No.1 for the sixth time, and 16 new companies make impressive debuts, including Acuity (No. 3), Twitter (No. 24), and Riot Games (No. 13).

The world's 500 largest companies generated $31.2 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in profits in 2014. Together, this year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries.

Google tops the list once again, marking its eighth appearance and fifth time as No. 1.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

American Express is a global financial company that specializes in payment cards for consumers and businesses, as well as travel services. The company’s green charge card has the distinction of being the world’s first charge card to be made out of plastic, replacing the paper cards that were in use prior to its 1959 introduction. Amex was founded as a freight forwarding company in 1850. American Express Travelers Cheques, introduced in 1891, made it possible for people to obtain cash in foreign countries, changing the nature of travel and the company’s profile. Over its history, American Express has owned a cable TV business as well as an investment bank. The company is currently organized into four business segments: U.S. consumer services, international card services, commercial services, and global merchant and networking services.
