Formed in 2013 by the merger of American Airlines and U.S. Airways, the company provides air transportation to 350 destinations in 50 countries. The largest carrier on the 500 list was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It lost $8.9 billion as its sales nosedived 62%, causing it to drop from No. 70 to No. 174 in the rankings this year. The new year didn't start much better as revenue declined 50% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2021 with a significant decrease in passenger flight sales but an increase in cargo flight revenue.
