Airtel Payments Bank is India’s first payments bank–a type of financial institution that handles all forms of financial transactions except offering credit. The bank is a subsidiary of mobile giant Bharti Airtel, and leverages the parent’s telecoms network to reach rural, underbanked communities across India. Airtel Payments says it has more than 80 million monthly transacting users, and onboards over a million new customers every month. The bank has been profitable since 2021.
