Wegmans Food Markets

Employees say:

"This company prioritizes their employees to the extent that is rarely seen. If you want more or less work, if you have personal circumstances that you need time to address, they are there willing to help. When my daughter was in the hospital, they offered meals to help my family. That level of kindness was so unexpected and I learned that they have a whole team devoted to situations like that to support their employees. Every day they demonstrate that they value their employees, it's not just words, it's their actions. It is a fantastic company to work for!"

Employees say:

"Wegmans has truly provided me with a supportive and team-oriented environment, making you feel valued rather than just a number. The strong sense of care for employees stands out, and I've had incredible opportunities to grow within the company. Even when no immediate openings were available, my management team proactively created a project to support my career development—a testament to their dedication to helping employees succeed. The emphasis on career growth and encouraging team members to advance makes Wegmans a special place to work for me."

Staffers receive flexible scheduling, coaching from nutritionists, consistent pay increases, and a 401(k) plan with a generous company match. The supermarket giant has run a college scholarship program for over 40 years, and offers mentorship and career development sessions.Employees say:"There is generally a feeling that coworkers are your family, especially in smaller departments. We are constantly changing and looking for ways to improve. Feedback is welcome and employees can see their suggestions come to life - I don't know many places that do that."

Employees say:

"It truly is a family-oriented company and I truly feel like I'm part of the team and that my voice matters. I'm never made to feel less than when needing to call off for a shift with short notice due to sickness/childcare issues, etc. After being in one area for a year, I was trained for and offered a promotion which I LOVE—I also was approached recently to see if I'd be interested in learning the position of store coordinator. When I first started with the company almost 3 years ago I didn't think there was a possibility to move up—it means a lot that my potential is noticed!"

Employees say:

"The company has a very strong family feel to it. No matter what store you are at, you are welcomed like you have worked in that store for years and everyone is very welcoming. I feel that a lot of people try to get to know you on a personal level, rather than just a working level. Employees are given a lot of opportunities to grow within the company and hard work gets recognized very often and in ways that make people feel important to the company (shout outs in huddles, utilizing the favorites people page, verbal recognition from upper management)."

Employees say:

"Wegmans is truly an amazing company to work for. I don't think that you could find another job where going to work feels like going to be with family. The Wegmans managers are exceptional in what they do. I have been with this company for 3 years and in all my time here, there has not been a single manager who treated me like I was just another employee. Every manager I have ever encountered takes the time to build a connection and ensures that you feel, recognized as the human being that you are. Wegmans has multiple ways in which they recognize the hard work that the employees put in each day from employee appreciation events twice a month to the CARE card programs and many other special events."

A long-standing top finisher on the best companies list, Wegmans relies on its employees to drive improvements: All 54,000-plus staff can share questions or comments directly with senior VP of operations Bob Farr.

Employees say: "I love the Wegmans Family. Not just the folks named Wegman, but the other 53,000 'Family' Members. People here truly care about one another, and that shows in our everyday interactions with one other and our customers. 'Every Day You Get Our Best' is not just a slogan. There are so many opportunities and supports here that anyone who puts forth the effort can have a rewarding career."

Employees say:

"You truly feel like a member of the family in working for this company. You have the opportunity to speak with the Wegmans family; share thoughts, ideas, celebrations and they remember you. It feels very genuine any time you speak with a member of the family or higher-level leadership. I love that we celebrate our people and appreciate their individuality. The abundance of resources available and avenues for listening are in my opinion, unmatched."

Employees say:

"Wegmans does a wonderful job of meeting the needs of working parents. As a single mother who was also in school full time, working for Wegmans made it much easier to balance work - home life responsibilities. I am able to stay home with my child when she is sick or take time off without worrying about getting in trouble or penalized for it. Management takes the time to understand circumstances and will ask you if everything is ok which makes you feel more comfortable and cared for as an employee. Wegmans also allows for opportunities such as the Wegmans scholarship which was extremely helpful for me a single parent in school."

Employees say:

"I think that Wegmans does so much for their employees that I often forget this is just a grocery store. Food in the breakrooms, community events, and other benefits make me remember why I love working here."

Employees say:

"Coming from a different background and culture I have never felt like I don't belong. My manager has truly showed me how much she cares about me and who I am. I am extremely thankful to work for a company that is so accepting and has given me ample opportunity to learn and grow. I am also thankful for the amazing leaders I am surrounded by that want me to succeed with the company."

Employees say:

"They really care about me and the people that work here. They want me to feel and be my best self, in and out of work. I've worked here for almost 11 years, and I will be forever grateful. I had a devastating house fire in 2014, and the kindness and compassion through financial and, most importantly, emotional support I received from not only my management team and co-workers but the EAP resources will be something I will always remember and cherish."

Employees say:

"I believe Wegmans is able to give every single employee an opportunity to grow. Whether that be within the company, as a professional, or even just as a person, Wegmans gives every employee what they need to be their best self. I have seen a great deal of people become more confident, more outgoing, and more professional while working here, including myself. There is something new to learn every day at work and even more opportunities to become a part of the growth that Wegmans sees. Focus groups, close management relationships, and the Dish app give every single employee a chance to better themselves, their team, and the company as a whole."

Appearing on the Best Companies to Work For list every year for over a quarter-century, East Coast supermarket chain Wegmans has committed itself to growing employee well-being since 1953, when CEO Robert Wegman introduced benefits for all staff and raised wages. Wegmans hasn’t laid off an employee in its 107 years of operation. Its ethos of showing care for workers has extended to introducing name tags to remove barriers to non-native staff and making online language courses available to those who wish to strengthen their English-language skills. In 2023, Wegmans introduced improved hair covers for locs and textured hair. To better educate employees on the resources available to them, Wegmans rebranded its worker assistance program in 2022. The company also expanded its LiveWell offerings last year to introduce TogetherAll, an anonymous online community for peer-based mental health support.
