Appearing on the Best Companies to Work For list every year for over a quarter-century, East Coast supermarket chain Wegmans has committed itself to growing employee well-being since 1953, when CEO Robert Wegman introduced benefits for all staff and raised wages. Wegmans hasn’t laid off an employee in its 107 years of operation. Its ethos of showing care for workers has extended to introducing name tags to remove barriers to non-native staff and making online language courses available to those who wish to strengthen their English-language skills. In 2023, Wegmans introduced improved hair covers for locs and textured hair. To better educate employees on the resources available to them, Wegmans rebranded its worker assistance program in 2022. The company also expanded its LiveWell offerings last year to introduce TogetherAll, an anonymous online community for peer-based mental health support.
The 107-year-old grocery chain based in Rochester, N.Y., has made Fortune’s Best Companies list every year since its 1998 launch. Wegmans employs over 53,000 workers and maintains a $15 minimum wage, nearly double the national average. Workers laud the privately owned company for its intensive training program, commitment to flexible scheduling, and focus on providing employees the opportunity for advancement. For the past five years, Wegmans has consistently reviewed each job opening with a college degree requirement and shifted the language to say “preferred,” putting the emphasis instead on skills and relevant job experience.
