Ameren was formed in 1997 through the merger of Union Electric Company and Central Illinois Public Service Company, but its roots go back more than a century through those predecessor utilities. Today, the St. Louis-based company is a fully rate-regulated electric and natural gas utility serving about 2.5 million electric customers and more than 900,000 natural gas customers across Illinois and Missouri. Ameren employees total roughly 9,000, and the company’s service territory covers about 64,000 square miles. Ameren operates through major subsidiaries including Ameren Missouri, Ameren Illinois, and Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois, supporting power generation, transmission, and distribution across the Midwest.
