The social network now boasts 110&nbsp;million daily unique users, 60&nbsp;million of whom are outside the U.S. Reddit’s share price, meanwhile, has risen more than fivefold since its March 2024 IPO.

Reddit moderators shut down half the site over the weekend in protest of recent firings. Erin, can anyone tame this unruly website and turn it into a viable business? I'm going to argue no and what happened this weekend is a perfect illustration of my argument. Reddit is controlled by its moderators. And these are volunteers. This is an army of people who are not paid or employed by Reddit. But they control these things called sub reddits which is basically like big message boards. They decided they didn't like personnel decision that interim CEO Ellen Pao made, she got rid of this woman Victoria Taylor who controls the Ask Me Anything product, which is very popular and so they shut down half of the biggest sub reddits on the site and suddenly it's dark or they went private. And you can no longer access it. So having a business model based on where your users, if they get angry, can delete half of your site, is really problematic. I agree, but it has to be a business, a real business. If you're in Ellen Pow situation, you're looking at the balance sheet, you're going, come on, man. This has got to change. [ LAUGH ] Reddit's been around for ten years. It's one of the largest sites on the internet, 160 million unique users a month, something like that and yet they've only brought in $ 8 million in ad revenue and they remain unprofitable. This has got to change. It's true and they raised a bunch of venture capital last year. Like specifically to turn it into a real business. The problem is that it hasn't been for so long and that its users are so used to doing whatever they want, that controlling them has become almost impossible. And Reddit is basically a reflection of the Internet at large. It's got some really ugly Sort of things there. There's a lot of sexism. There's some racism. There's some really bad things that advertisers do not want to be anywhere near that. And that's why they only make $ 8 million in revenue. Right, I mean, the way I see it Reddit's got two options. It could be the next Digg, right? [ LAUGH ] Digg famously arrival. Mm. No less of Reddit. Famously kind of conceded to its users at every turn And it almost died, just because it wouldn't change and then on the other hand, you've got a Facebook situation, right? Where Facebook constantly changed the features on it's site. People were outraged. I'm never going to use Facebook again, I'm gonna stop using it. And they're just going yeah, yeah, it'll blow over and it did and Facebook's more successful than ever. Right. And then here's the difference here. Okay, so Facebook, its users can't just delete three quarters of its site. Right. One person deletes their account. Facebook is going to be fine, but they can't delete everybody elses account, or delete entire big important sections of the site. And that's why I think Reddit is always going to have this problem.
