Experts share how to mitigate bias in A.I. 

one of the key challenges in ai today is data on algorithmic bias. So can you give us a specific example from your work where bias can creep in and some of the ways you're mitigating that. Yeah, sure. So there's no such thing as a perfectly unbiased algorithms. So I always tell business units the fact that we're pushing you to conduct fairness assessments is not because we think that you've done something wrong or that your product in particular is really problematic instead of something we always want to check for. So whether it be something relatively innocuous, like an auto focus feature that um finds faces or find eyes and um focuses on that. Um anything from that too. You know when we're talking about robotics frequently computer vision is a major part of that. So if you have a self driving car then you need to think about being able to detect pedestrians and ensure that you can detect all sorts of pedestrians and not just um people that are represented um dominantly in your training or test set. And so these are just a couple examples um but it really spans the gamut in terms of the types of use cases we're seeing and the challenge, oh is is business units often understand when you explain to them um what the issue is broadly of bias and no one wants to produce products that are biased but it's actually quite difficult in practice to figure out the right benchmarks for testing for bias, the right techniques to mitigate bias and that's where research really plays a key role because this is a really new space. There's constantly new methods being developed and we really want to be on the cutting edge in terms of the techniques that were employing Margaret. How about you any examples where you've seen bias and in some of the algorithms, what you can talk about? Yeah, that's tricky. I've worked on face recognition and face detection and language models. Um, I suppose I won't speak to language that uh, I suppose I won't speak to computer vision. I'll do language models or something instead. Um, so we find that when we have these large language models training on tons and tons of data, um, a lot of it is sourced from the web. Most of it is sourced from the web where we see a lot of racism and sexism and able ism and ageism, one of the largest corporate used right now, is Largely sourced from Wikipedia, which is primarily written by men, white men between something like 20-30 or so. Um, and single and PhD higher level education, which means that the kind of topics that are covered that are then scraped in training the language models reflect those knowledge bases reflect those backgrounds. So for example, if you try and do a search for black history, you'll be redirected to african american history, which is american centric and not quite understandable about, you know what, you know, the whole history of people who are black. Um, and so it's uh, it's a really key issue when it comes to what the language models regurgitate as a function of the normal skews just in who is talking and who is being scraped on the web as well as the inherent racism and sexism et cetera that gets expressed. Um and you end up coming out and what's generated and what suggested. Yeah, I was looking recently at GPT Three and and there's uh I'm muslim by background and and um there was a lot of research on how D. 23 basically if you start writing the words muslim, it turns into this violence related narrative I thought is very interesting. There's a lot of evidence of that. Yeah.

[ MUSIC ] When you think about where millennials are gonna invest their money over the next couple of decades, I think that there is a really interesting transformation that's happening in the financial markets where they're gonna have available To them globally a whole new category, a whole new group of investment opportunities that didn't exist in our older generation. Things, in large part, to something like digital currency and blockchain. When I speak to kind of an older generation, digital assets like Bitcoin or Ether are foreign, are strange. They challenge a whole bunch of preconceived notions around what is money and is it even legal or not, but I think for Millenials and the younger generation that they're being brought up in an environment where Crypto's been around since as early as they can remember. I do think that Crypto assets are gonna be a part of their investment thesis in their portfolio, going forward, and it's largely because they came up Along with the development of the asset class. [ MUSIC ] Millennials, I think, look at money in two different ways, my view. One is it depends upon how much money they have. So on the lower end, when you talk about smaller amounts of money, I think they're looking for only about [ UNKNOWN ] It's Robin Hood. It's places like that that are really coming on the scene and taking a digital First approach. But individuals, even millenials, they want advice, they want people who are gonna sit there and be their advocate. Because they want to as they accumulate wealth, they wanna make sure to do and making the right decision. So I do think there's still a bifurcation when you are talking about real dollars for or smaller dollars, right. And I think that's the big difference. I think there's two types either they're like super optimizers, and they take pride on that. So they're the type of millennial that uses like, the best savings accounts with the best APYRA. And they have six different credit cards they're optimizing A lot of it and then the other set of people are people who just want to use it as and friendliness a day to day. So I think one there, they're going to park their money everywhere. As soon as someone razor reduce the rate, the other set will choose the one that's easy. And most simple base on their current [ UNKNOWN ]. [ MUSIC ] I think what millennials focused on first is being treated as a customer. They've grown up in a digital era where information and Accessibility is fast and quick. And they expect it to be treated like an individual, not a number. So companies who can deliver on that customer value proposition I think win with millennials in the future, whether that's large banks or small startup. They. They want their money to have a positive impact. They're actually beginning to realize their money is having an impact even if they don't mean fortune. That if their money is over at XYZ bank in a deposit and they're making loans to gun manufactures. Right, you know their money is having that effect. So either their money can have the positive effect they wanted. Too, or it can have an effect that they're ignoring on the fact they might not want. I love it because millennials aren't, don't want to compromise in the jobs they take. I want a job where I'm paid, you know, competitive wage and we have a positive impact. I'm not willing to take a pay cut for it and I'm not willing to work at something where I don't see the positive impact. Go millennials, go Gen Z give us help. Give the baby boomers help, we're cool. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]

Where Are Millennials Investing Their Money?

[ MUSIC ] If I had a crystal ball and knew when the next recession would hit, I'm way wealthier than I am today. We're all talking about it. I think the level of preparedness post the greatest financial crisis is one that Financial service companies are truly thinking through so that there are proactive strategies for how to manage in a downturn as opposed to reactive. And so I think we're smarter world for having been through 2008, 2009. So I'm not an economist and therefore I'm not going to make a prediction about when the next recession may or may not hit. I do think that the banking industry has more capital. Well position today and perhaps it has been. The unfortunate part about when it happens. I think it's gonna be more of a self inflicted wound. Then the market just turning whether it's the trade issues, the global issues, the global growth slowing, it'll be a perception created recession. The more people that say, I think it's coming let me pause spending. What do you do? You're creating a recession by pausing, you're spending. I think the interesting part is, are we better equipped with AI and blockchain and other mechanisms that actually can help us detect volatility more quickly and actually react to, To it. I think there were some concerns about trigger points being made by automated trading. And I think the combination of that automation with AI and with an immutable ledger [ UNKNOWN ] blockchain that's keeping records of all these that you actually could detect and prevent damping some of the impacts a little bit more that could take out some of that volatility and some of that uncertainty in the market. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] Well, you're never ready for a session, right? [ LAUGH ] What's bad is currently the protective environments. And [ UNKNOWN ] are limited now to use their global trades, limited by a political environment. I think it's bad for the business. We can send services, artificial intelligence from Pune, India To San Francisco. Why can't you send also goods and money and free movement? That may impact recession. So I think that we have to really step up especially global CEOs like me have to step up saying that, look when good move, jobs are created. I mean money moves jobs are created. People go to school, people get educated better and I think that's something that will hinder definitely the recessions. I think it'll be bad, I think they to be honest I think 08 was the order of course. It's a little bit like asking me There's a bridge that was designed to hold twenty cars passing over at a time and there's now a hundred going over it, when's it going to break? When's it going to collapse? That's really your answer. I'm kind of shocked it's gone on this long and I think we have deep deep structural architectonic level problems in our economy that will surface at some point. Basically people my age or older decided to rob your future from you and And we did it, the average 65- year- old is going to live now over the course of their life $ 70, 000 better off. And the average person graduating from college at 22, can live about $ 450, 000 worse off over their life thanks to what's gone on in the 40 or 50 years before you showed up. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
