When asked about customization, Pete noted that “you can’t customize or modify the recipes that are already included in the app. However, you are able to create your own recipes, which allows for full customization.” He rated personalization a 5 out of 5, as you can input and store your fridge/pantry inventory for easy recipe creation. Your shopping list will automatically adjust based on what you already have at home, which we love.
There is a pantry feature on the app, but it can be difficult to find. “If you’re in your shopping list, click on the three dots to the right of the Shopping List heading,” Pete wrote. “Then you can view options including ‘Print Shopping List’ and ‘View Pantry.’ Once you click on view pantry, you can add foods to your pantry list and the app will leave them off your future grocery lists. It works well, it’s just hard to find in the app so many users may miss it initially.”
Pete found the shopping list useful, rating it a 5 out of 5. “You can import ingredients into your shopping list straight from a recipe,” he noted. “There’s also a button at the bottom of the grocery list that says ‘shop my list.’ This connects to either Instacart or the Walmart app for easy shopping and delivery/pickup.”

When you open the app, it is nearly blank aside from three labeled tabs—cook, plan, and shop. “You’ll have to find recipes online and import them into the app,” he added. “You can save the recipes that you import based on the course, type of cuisine, main ingredient, or create your own custom tags.”
Our tester thinks that importing a lot of recipes into the app could be an involved process but could be something that you do slowly over time as you find recipes you enjoy.
“There are some slight issues though, especially when using the ‘shop’ feature,” Pete wrote. “This is a cool idea, because it basically compiles a grocery list based on the recipes you selected for the day or week. However, if multiple recipes use the same ingredient, instead of collating and adding up the amount of the ingredient, the ingredient will be shown multiple times on the grocery list. An example of this would be common seasonings like salt and pepper, which show up in almost every recipe.” Because of this, he rated the shopping list feature just a 2.5 out of 5.

Pete rated the shopping list feature a 5 out of 5. “The shopping list was extremely helpful,” he said. “I liked that you could easily import the ingredients from a recipe directly into the grocery list.” You can also sync the app with your calendar for planning purposes.
Being able to add, import, and fully customize recipes is a great feature. “I also loved that the smart grocery list considered the ingredients that I already have in my pantry,” Pete said. “Instead of leaving them off the shopping list entirely, they were simply unchecked, showing that I already had those ingredients in stock. It did give me the ability to re-check those ingredients if I wanted to shop for more of them, if desired.”

For example, if your grocery list had two apples on it, you can’t easily change it to three. You’d have to click on the plus (+) button, then type in apple, and then add it to the list.” Because of this, he rated the shopping list feature a 3 out of 5.
Pete would use this app regularly, and recommends it for someone who struggles to decide what to cook each night. “This app makes it extremely simple to find recipes, create a meal plan for the week, and make an easy-to-follow grocery list,” he said.
“The coolest feature of Mealime is the ability to build your own meal plan each week,” Pete added. “From the recipe database, you can select meals from a variety of categories such as ‘most popular,’ ‘top rated,’ ‘super simple,’ and more. Once you select the meals you’d like to have in your plan, hit ‘build plan’ and the app imports all of the ingredients that you need directly into the grocery list.”

That said, our tester noted one area where the app leaves just a little to be desired: “I do think the overall UX of the app could be improved slightly,” Pete said. “There are screens where there aren’t any back buttons, so a few times, I had to leave the app and start over to get where I wanted to go.”
Still, Pete thinks the app’s features overall provide fantastic value for the price. “One of the coolest features is the ‘cook with ingredients you have,’ which allows you to enter ingredients that you already have in your house, and eMeals will find recipes that contain those ingredients,” he said. “This feature makes meal planning very simple, especially for a busy family that doesn’t have time to get to the grocery store and is working with what they have on hand.”
