Best known for scoring goals at Old Trafford, home to storied English football club Manchester United, Marcus Rashford has ventured off the pitch to champion impoverished youth struggling to get enough food during the pandemic—a cause very close to the striker, who received food assistance as a child. This spring, the 22-year-old penned an open letter to politicians calling for the U.K. government to extend a free school meal voucher program for children in poverty through the summer, previously set to expire in July. Following Rashford’s campaign, the Boris Johnson–led government suddenly changed course and committed a fresh £120 million ($158 million) to a food fund through the summer holidays. Upon news of the U.K. government’s reversal, the footballer tweeted: “I don’t even know what to say. Just look at what we can do when we come together. THIS is England in 2020.”
