Some 75 different styles of hummus and other dips are being recalled by the Food and Drug Administration due to possible listeria contamination.
Pita Pal Foods is recalling the snacks, which were sold under 10 brand names, including the Harris Teeter store brand, Pita Pal, Schnucks and 7-Select. The products were sold nationwide and in the United Arab Emirates.
The company says it has not received any reports of consumer illness, but is recalling the products as a precaution. People who have purchased the goods are being encouraged to discard them or return them to the store for a refund.
Listeria can cause symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages in pregnant women.
This isn’t the first listeria outbreak this year. Earlier this month, Trader Joes and Green Giant vegetables faced a recall over possible contamination. In March, a California company recalled avocados in six states over a possible contamination. Listeria fears also impacted 300,000 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken and beef products last October. And it was detected in recalled frozen broccoli last May.
