Businesses have been grappling with how to manage their environmental impact since long before the phrases “global warming” and “climate change” became part of the vernacular. Today, only the most callous and irresponsible companies neglect to consider the pollution or the carbon emissions generated by their work.

But Fortune’s Change the World list, which launched its 2nd edition this week, doesn’t honor basic ecological awareness; it recognizes companies that go further and make solving social problems (including environmental ones) a part of their core business models. Of the 50 companies on this year’s list, at least 20 have business units that are making products that creatively reduce society’s waste, pollution and carbon output. We’ve focused on five well-known brands below; click here to see the entire list.
