Ryan Donnell for Fortune

The Golden Arches has announced a 10-year plan in which it will eventually buy all of its eggs from suppliers who don’t house their hens in small cages. McDonald’s (MCD) announcement last year strongly accelerated the trend toward cage-free eggs across the industry, with nearly 200 companies following the lead of the fast-food giant. Fortune explores the subject—the immense challenges of the transition, along with surprising insights about the lives of chickens—in a new feature that you can read here.
