Is Salesforce for sale?

That’s been the rumor of recent months, so Fortune’s Dan Primack asked three people who lead mergers and acquisitions during a session at Brainstorm Tech – Marc Brown of Microsoft, Jackie Rees of Yahoo, and Arlen Shenkman of SAP. Both Microsoft (MSFT) and SAP have been mentioned as potential buyers.

Brown’s answer was that “it depends on Marc” – meaning Marc Benioff, founder and CEO of Salesforce (CRM). “You have to ask him.” Shenkman went further, saying “it’s hard to make a deal work” – suggesting that he had looked at it, but wasn’t pursuing it.

Jackie Rees was the most definitive. “No,” she said. “I don’t know why he (Benioff) would sell the company. I see him as the guy who could be consolidating the industry.”

The panel declined to comment on whether Twitter was for sale — another recent rumor.
